Battle for La Fière bridge, June 6, 1944. (German view)

This painting is a German view of the fight for the crucial bridge at La Fière on D-Day.

As the Kampfgruppe tasked with driving the Americans from the bridge come into view, heavy US machine-gun fire forces the Germans to take cover. Two obsolete Renault R35 tanks continue to lead the attack with a Hotchkiss H 39 following behind. The first Renault tank veers into a ditch at the side of the road as it is hit multiple times and starts to burn. A determined NCO leads forward a group of German riflemen and a light-machine-gun using the second R 35 as cover. But the tank attracts so much fire from Bazookas and the US 57mm M1 anti-tank gun, they have to avoid getting too close and are forced into cover.
