Hoping to spring a surprise and outflank the defenses of the Mareth Line, Lt. Gen. Freyberg VC negotiated the whole of his command in secret along a single dusty track, through desolate terrain. Only previously used by Bedouins, Wilder's Gap had been scouted as a possible route just weeks before.
Freyburg was always to be seen up with the leading troops, often standing on the roof of his Stuart command tank, with it's dummy wooden gun barrel and host of communications equipment. Here he urges along Shermans of the Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire Yeomonries from 8th Armoured Brigade.
