Immediately after their victory over the Argives and their allies, following the custom the time, the Spartan victors set about claiming ownership of the battlefield.
A trophy was erected as an offering of thanks to the gods. Built using the captured arms and armour of the vanquished draped on poles, serving as a makeshift mannequin.
