Leading tanks of the improvised Kampfgruppe approach the river Calore. At this point in the battle for the Salerno, all that lay between the Germans and the American beachhead were a hastily assembled line of American artillery and anti-tank guns on a ridge behind the river Calore. Rather than wait for infantry support Oberst Von Doering decided to attack using his armour, hoping to seize the two pontoon bridges that crossed the river, using speed and surprise. Unknown to Doering, the Americans were waiting and the pontoon bridges had already been destroyed.
Pzkpfw IV tanks of Panzer-Regiment 2, 16. Panzer-Division race across open fields in their bold and desperate attempt to cross the river. The scratch American force of howitzers of 158th and 189th Field Artillery Battalions pour fire onto the tanks, supported by a handful of M7 self-propelled guns, M10 tank destroyers and anti-tank guns.
