Counterattack in the Krinkelterwald. December 16, 1944

At around 1100hrs, the command post of C/393rd Infantry was on the verge of being overrun by another attack from Grenadier Regiment 990 and Füsilier-Kompanie 277.
The only available reserves for a counterattack were 25 men under Lt Harry Parker from the minelaying platoon, plus 13 more from the battalion headquarters company. The scratch force was organised under 1/Lt Lawrence Duffin.
The US troops moved towards the command post through the woods. On approaching, Duffin noticed a large force of about three German companies. Heavily outnumbered, Duffin decided to use the element of surprise. He and Parker ordered their men to fix bayonets and charge at the unsuspecting Germans. The ensuing mêlée around the bunkers and dugouts of the command post drove the Germans back and restored the US defense lines.
