The first glider landings were conducted in the early hours of June 6, with 52 gliders of the 101st Airborne landing in the dark at 0325 hours, closely followed by 46 gliders of the 82nd Airborne Division landing at around 0410 hours. Initial drops were conducted using C-47 transport aircraft as tugs and Waco CG-4A gliders.
These missions were followed that evening by two resupply missions.
Two more resupply missions followed on the morning of D+1.
The use of gliders in airborne assaults was still in it's infancy and there were large numbers of casualties due to crashes and early releases over the ocean. Some 123 troops were casualties in the Waco gliders and 340 in the larger Horsa gliders. However the gliders were vital, helping to deliver larger items of equipment to resupply paratroopers on the ground.
