After two months of bloody fighting the Japanese decided to focus attacks on 203 Metre Hill on the western flank of the Russian defenses around Port Arthur. If the hill fell it would allow the Japanese guns to target every part of the city and the Russian ships in the port. The struggle for it's possession would be intense and hard fought, in bitter winter conditions.
During this day the Japanese had broken through and captured trenches, only to be ejected by determined Russian counter attacks.
Here, a group of men from the Japanese 7th Division have fought their way into the Russian positions, only for soldiers from the 5th East Siberian Rifle Regiment to launch a determined counter attack.
