There were only two Panzer units on the Cotentin Peninsula on D-Day, both replacement and training units, equipped mainly with out dated war-booty French tanks of the 1940 campaign.
One of these units, Panzer-Abt.206 was moved to reinforce the Montebourg front, arriving during the night of June 9.
Here we see some of these obsolete tanks on their way to the front, passing exhausted and injured German infantry.
Leading the column is a late production Hotchkiss H-39 with a 37mm gun. The Germans adapted these tanks which they designated, Panzerkampfwagen 38H 735(f), with an opening turret hatch and German tank radio.
At the rear of the group is a Souma S-35, one of the best 1940 French tanks and the most popular with the German tank crews because of the greater interior space and larger 47mm tank gun.
