This painting is a Russian view of the fight on the southern approaches to Cairn Hill during the Russo-Japanese War.
A company of the 2nd East Siberian Rifle Regiment defends a small hill less than 1km ahead of the Russian main position on Cairn Hill, 211m high and a vital part of the Russian defenses.
Japanese infantry have been closing on the Russian positions and now in the early morning of 30 August launch their attack. As the Japanese emerge from the fields of Kaoliang they are faced with barbed wire that slows and disrupts their advance, allowing the Russian infantry to pour rifle fire onto them. The trench line is adapted to allow the sighting of Maxim machine guns which add to the terrible devastation of the Japanese ranks.
