A painting of Italian soldiers training in the use of anti-tank grenades.
The Italian army developed a whole series of close range, individual anti-tank grenades and devices, mostly developed in the field.
When a tank approached smoke grenades would be thrown from dugouts to hinder the tank crews visibility. Then when the tank was at close range, they leapt out throwing grenades at the tracks or engine deck to immobilize it.
In this painting a lieutenant supervises the training exercise against an M13/40 tank by soldiers armed with a wooden training stick grenade, with smoke grenade attached.
Next to the officer are different anti-tank devices.
