The Natal Native Horse fought at Isandlwana as part of Col. Durnford's Column.
There were five troops of mounted auxiliaries under Durnford's command and they played an active role in the battle, being among the first troops to engage the Zulus.
This detailed drawing depicts a dismounted trooper of Hlubi's (Basotho) troop.
They wore mustard yellow corduroy uniforms and a red rag around their slouch hats to identify them as allies to the British.
Preferring to ride their mounts barefoot, many carried a quiver of assegai spears on their backs, as well as being armed with the Swinburne-Henry Carbine.
