This painting is a Soviet view of the defense at Horodenka against the advancing Hungarian forces.
This painting depicts the situation near the village of Horodenka at about 1300hrs on 4th July, as a Soviet covering force in ambush positions open fire on advancing Hungarian trucks of the 5th Motorized Rifle Battalion..
About two battalions of Soviet soldiers took up positions on higher ground on the edge of the village.
The Soviet infantry fought desperately using mortars and automatic weapons to slow the Hungarian advance so that their comrades had time to cross the last remaining bridges over the River Dnestr.
In the background of the painting, the Hungarian column can be seen under fire as Soviet infantry open fire in the foreground.
