Captain Allan Gardner, 14th Hussars & Staff Officer.

Based on research by Kate Birbeck from her book ‘With Rifle and Spear Among the Zulu.'
The painting depicts Captain Alan Gardner’s attempt to cut through the Zulu lines and take news of the attack on the camp to Lord Chelmsford.
Although unable to find a way through the Zulus, Gardner survived the battle, and is credited with warning the garrison at Rorke’s Drift of the Zulu threat.
