On Monday the 25th, the Germans made another attempt to break the British defences at Oosterbeek, with the help of newly arrived Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf.B tanks from schwere Panzer-Abteilung 506.
At least three of these Kingtiger tanks, with Sturmgeschütze and Sturmhaubitze self-propelled guns of Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 280 were split into three groups to attack the British positions.
One of these groups advanced along Bildersweg on the south west edge of Oosterbeek. The British Airborne troops put up a fierce resistance. 75mm Pack Howitzers positioned on either side of the road fired on the advancing Germans, but were unable to stop them and were soon put out of action.
A Polish 6-pounder anti-tank gun took up the fight, positioned across the road at the junction of the Bildersweg with Benedendorpsweg it opened fire on the Kingtiger, but again with little effect and was knocked out when the tank returned fire.
Here, the Kingtiger scarred by multiple hits, has reached the junction.Turning onto Benedendorpsweg it would advance a little further, firing on the church tower of the Oude Kerk, before British artillery fire from the south side of the Rhine would stop the German attack.
Beyond the Kingtiger, a supporting StuG III advances in front of the red brick Concert Hall.
