Mississippi Marine Brigade amphibious tactics were first successfully used at the Duck River Shoals, Tennessee.
With the sounding of the steam boat whistle, the armed side-wheel steamer and flag ship Autocrat landed troops of Brigadier General Alfred W. Ellet's Cavalry Battalion to pursue elements of the 6th Texas Cavalry.
Wide gangways were rapidly swung out enabling the "Horses Marines" to cross to the riverbank and chase the Confederates through the woods and swamps.
