The Fleet Brigade. Fort Sumter, September 8, 1863

Sailors and Marines of the Fleet Brigade scramble ashore among the rubble surrounding Fort Sumter.
As a Marine officer urges his men on, Confederate musket fire, bricks, grenades and flaming turpentine flares rain down.
Of approximately 400 Marines and sailors who volunteered for the action, eight were killed, 19 wounded and 105 captured.
Fort Sumter would defy Union forces until February 17th, 1865, when Confederate forces withdrew from Charleston and the fort was abandoned.
