The Truce: Lt-Col. John Frost and Major Doug Crawley.
After days of fighting against overwhelming odds at the Arnhem road bridge and with reinforcements unable to reach them, the British airborne force under Lt-Col. John Frost and the German SS surrounding them agreed a truce to remove the hundreds of British wounded from the cellars and surrounding areas. As the wounded Lt-Col. Frost, was stretchered out of Brigade HQ, he spotted one of his wounded company officers, Major Douglas Crawley.
Having previously been in more than one desperate situation together, Frost spoke out to Crawley, 'Well Doug, I'm afraid we haven't gotten away with it this time.'
'No sir', he replied, 'but we gave 'em a damn good run for their money.'
