Carrizal, June 21, 1916

While pursuing Pancho Villa, Gen. Pershing received intelligence that he was at Carrizal in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Troops C and K of the 10th Cavalry were sent to investigate. Instead, the cavalrymen encountered Mexican Fedral troops under Gen. Felix Gomez. Negotiations between the forces failed and the 80 cavalrymen prepared to attack the Mexicans, who had an estimated strength of between 400 and 500.
As the line drew close to a dried irrigation ditch, they came under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Although bullets were impacting all around, the cavalrymen returned accurate fire. By now wounded, Captain Boyd stood to lead his men forward from the irrigation ditch, but was instantly killed. Lieutenant Adair took command and carried C Troop forward, storming the town.
Lieutenant Adair was then also killed while bringing forward badly needed ammunition. Outnumbered and with no officers the troopers were forced to withdraw despite inflicting considerable losses, including killing Gen. Gomez.
Captured here, is the moment Captain Boyd stood to lead C Troop from the irrigation ditch to storm the Mexican positions.
