Near Fort Phil Kearny, as part of the US Army's deployment to open up the areas rich mineral resources, a small woodcutting party of civilians and soldiers from the 18th US Infantry faced overwhelming numbers of determined Cheyenne and Sioux led by Red Cloud.
Armed with new breech loading, Model 1866 Springfield rifles, the infantry took up strong defensive positions behind wagon beds removed from their running gear.
With ample ammunition and in a strong position, Captain James Powell's command held their own as they faced the valiant attack of the Plains Indians. The new, rapid firing rifles inflicting high numbers of casualties, despite the bravery of the Native Americans mounted attack.
