Reno's skirmish line, June 25 1876

This painting depicts the initial skirmish line of troops from the 7th US Cavalry that struck a major encampment of Northern Plains Indians, at a place known as Greasy Grass to the village defenders, and the Little Big Horn to the invading horse soldiers.
Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer split his force with Major Marcus Reno's being the first to reach the edge of the camp where he dismounted his men, one trooper detailed to hold his and the horses of three other troopers at the rear while his comrades joined their fellow troopers fanned out in a line moving towards the village.
Reno's troopers were soon confronted by as many as 2000 warriors under such leaders as Crazy horse, Sitting Bull, Lame deer, Hump, and Two Moon. who soon repulsed the attack.
Reno would join Captain Benteen's command across the river on high ground where the survivors would hold up for several days, avoiding the fate of Custer and the rest of the 7th Cavalry.
