Beside the Emperor is Aulus Plautius, commander of the invasion army, with the lictor behind.
According to Nic Fields, author of the book this painting was created for, we can't know for sure if Claudius rode an Indian elephant in Britannia, but he quotes a line from Graves where he has Claudius recall: 'I travelled on elephant-back like an Indian prince.'
