As the 31st Regiment advanced on the Sikh positions defending the village of Aliwal, a lone Sikh cavalryman bravely rode out to confront the advancing British line. Around him Sikh irregular troops were starting to abandon their positions.
A British officer ran out to meet him, but before he could get there the Sikh rider was shot from his horse.
Regular Sikh troops fought on to defend their position (one of their light artillery pieces can be seen in the compound), while the main Sikh force can be seen in the background, beyond the village.
