As Confederate infantry pressed their advantage early in the battle of Gettysburg, Brigadier General Robinson selected the 16th Maine to buy time and cover the withdrawal of the remainder of Paul's Brigade from Oak Ridge to Cemetery Hill.
Facing the bulk of Rodes's Division and with less than 300 rifles, Colonel Tilden's regiment could do little but slowly withdraw from Oak Ridge, firing as they retreated trying to slow the overwhelming Confederate advance.
After 20 minutes, surrounded and with no hope of escape, the regiments flags were torn to shreds to prevent their capture and Tilden defiantly snapped his sword at the hilt before he and the remaining 163 officers and men under his command surrendered.
