This painting is a US view of the fight for the crucial bridge at La Fière on D-Day.
Having taken possession of the La Fière bridge, Lieutenant John Dolan and A/505th are at the start of what will be a long, arduous fight to stop the Germans from breaking through and threatening the D-Day beachheads just a few miles away.
The bridge is blocked with an abandoned German truck and paratroopers are dug-in on either side of the bridge and road. Two bazooka teams are positioned either side of the road close to the eastern side of the bridge. Further along the road behind these are a 57mm M1 anti-tank gun and .30caliber machine-gun. Three tanks are approaching the bridge (two Renault R 35s, followed by a Hotchkiss H 39) supported by infantry and significant machine-gun fire. They are engaged by the bazooka teams who must leave their foxholes and expose themselves to enemy fire to get clear shots at the tanks. The German infantry scatter while the two R 35 tanks are hit one after another by multiple bazooka rockets and 57mm anti-tank rounds, knocking them both out.
