Initial attacks by Budenniy's First Horse Army against the Polish defences were repulsed with heavy losses on both sides. On 5 June, following a shift in tactics subjecting Polish defenses to more firepower, the First Horse Army was able to finally penetrate the main defensive lines.
The Bolshevik cavalry fought almost entirely from horseback, wearing the characteristic, 'Budenovka' hat.
In the background of this painting we see an innovation of the Russian civil wars, the tachanka. A horse drawn carriage carrying a Maxim machine-gun. The tachankas could accompany cavalry assaults and set up to provide fire support to the attack.
