German Ju 52 transport aircraft try to break the Soviet blockade and airlift supplies to the desperate and encircled 6.Armee at Stalingrad.
On 11th December the Luftwaffe attempted to fly 117 transports and bombers carrying supplies through the air blockade. Flying in small groups, throughout the day, but with only a handful of escort fighters available they hoped to avoid Soviet fighter patrols.
However, better than usual visibility enabled the Soviet pilots to easily spot the lumbering aircraft. Here, Leytenant Petr V. Bazanov, from 3rd Guards Fighter Regiment and another Soviet La-5 fighter, intercept Ju 52 aircraft south-west of Pitomnik.
The Luftwaffe lost 14 of it's valuable transports on this day.
