Frozen and hungry, on the night of 22/23 January 1943, the German defensive positions west of Stalingrad were abandoned with the survivors pulling back to the outskirts of the ruined city.
In this painting the remnants of XIV.Panzer-Korps retreat to Stalingrad, passing abandoned equipment rendered useless from a lack of fuel and ammunition.
Junior officers and veterans try to maintain some kind of cohesion among the beleaguered troops.
