This painting is a Texian view of the Mexican cavalry charge against the Texian defensive square at Coleto Creek during the Texas Revolution.
In the ranks of the Mustang volunteers on the east-facing side of the Texian square, a shout is heard, "Here come the Mexicans!" The Mexican Cavalry canter towards them, firing carbines as they near. Then swords are drawn and lances levelled as they break into a charge.
As the foremost Mexican cavalry reached the Texian lines, they were met with devastating cannon, musket and rifle fire.
