Matilda MK.2, 38th Tank Brigade, May 1942
Although disliked by the Soviet crews, the first Matilda IIs (designated MK.2 in Soviet use) were soon rushed into action in the defence of Moscow.
Matildas played a major role in operations in 1942 as part of the 6th Army in its attempt to encircle the Germans at Kharkov. The 38th Brigade was trapped and destroyed in the Wehrmacht counterattack.

Valentine (MK.3), 36th Tank Brigade, Second Battle of Kharkov, 1942
Assigned to the 22nd Tank Corps which took heavy losses at Kharkov, but escaped German envelopment. Reformed as the 5th Mechanised Corps, still equiped with British lend-lease tanks. The 5th was rushed to help stop the German attack to relieve Stalingrad in December 1942.
