This painting is a German view of the attack on Fort II at Piatnica
As part of the German invasion of Poland, 21 Infaterie-Division moved to cross the river Narew, attacking three forts guarding crossing points near Lomza. After two days of unsuccessful attempts by Infanterie-Regiment 45, Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers, along with artillery attempted to supress the forts prior to another attempt.
Here we see the attack on Fort II with it partially hidden by smoke and explosions from German bombing and artillery fire. German combat engineers try to clear barbed wire at the base of the fort and infantry move up in support while under Polish fire. German machine-guns provide covering fire as their comrades rush forward.
Stubborn Polish resistance forced the Germans to stop their assaults and withdraw from the area on 10th September.
