This privately commissioned painting shows Private Thomas Alfred Jones, VC, DCM, of the Cheshire Regiment, who was awarded the Victoria Cross after a daring dash alone and under fire across no mans, to deal with a German sniper during the battle of Morval, the Somme.
After entering the German trench, he was unexpectedly confronted with far more Germans than he'd anticipated. He went on to single-handedly capture over a hundred German soldiers. On realising where Jones had gone several of his comrades ran over to him and helped him bring the prisoners back to the British trenches.
